Description

Soft and fluffy buns filled with rich custard, perfect for breakfast or as an afternoon snack. Easy to make without an oven!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup pastry cream or custard
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix warm milk and yeast in a bowl and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl; create a well in the center and add yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg.
  3. Mix until a dough forms and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Divide the dough into small balls, flatten each ball and place a tablespoon of custard in the center, pinching edges to seal.
  6. Place the filled buns in a stovetop steamer and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes until fluffy and cooked through.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.

Notes

For a dairy-free option, use plant-based milk and butter. You can replace pastry cream with any favorite sweet filling like fruit preserves.
